The 2001 Vintage Power Wagon Rally
This was a great year for TW/TPs at the VPW rally, there 11 of them! There were also 6 real nice Power Giant PWs that showed up,.

The rains had been falling on Fairfield for a couple of weeks prior to the rally, and we were all worried about how soggy everything would be. Luckily while the ground was very wet (I got my Volvo stuck 3 feet off the road on the grass) there was only a couple of rain showers, most of the time it was dry and sunny(if a bit hot).

There were so many people to see, and so much to do that I never got to register until the last day! I guess since so many people knew me, nobody questioned my lack of name tag!

I was amazed to see TWs everywhere I went, since in previous years it has been Roger K., and John G. as the only people showing the Townie colors. The previous record for TWs at the rally was 5, so we more then doubled it!

Of course there were plenty of flat fenders, M-37s, and 60's pickup PWs, but everyone else will have pictures up of those trucks, so I put up the other stuff!

There were TWs and TPs(can't forget John G. or Don S.) that I knew about, and or had seen before, ones belonging to:

John G. of MN drove down from St. Paul in his 4wd TP, he made the last few miles on the front driveshaft only as he broke a rear axle shaft a few miles outside of Fairfield. I guess he was using that Big Block a little hard!
Don S. of TX, drove his modified 54 TP that is mounted on a 60's PW TW chassis, and powered by a 440
Ron S.drove his wifes PW TW all the way from VT, this truck has a 315 Hemi, and is built on a PW TW chassis with a better 2wd body put on it.
Mike Y. of WI, drove down in his 65 TW, he had just installed a 4 bbl intake and carb, and he said he was showing up other drivers who thought his truck was not up to the task on the way down.
Roger K., drove his 1964 PW TW up from GA with his family, and as seen here took it mudding a couple of times. He did not make it as far as Kevin, but he made it out under his own power!
Howard E. of OH, drove his 62 TW from Dayton and was on hand to cover the event for Street Trucks! I hope his article makes it into the magazine soon!
Kevin G. of MN, had a bit of trouble on a trail ride. Details below.

Dennis S. of MA, this truck was almost totaly rebuilt between the GA rally and the VPW rally.

Dennis cut this body below the rear windows(right at the body line) and put in sides from another TW!

Brian B. of GA trailered this truck to the rally, he had gone to buy it after the GA rally(he had been trying for four years) and was finally able to talk the owner out of it!

But there were a few surprises as well, Jeff D. drove up in a 1961 PW TW that he had finagled out of Saudi Arabia when he had been there working for the airlines. Jeff is now treasure hunting down in Florida, and he drove his TW which had been in storage since 1988 from Reno NV to Fairfield, and after the rally he was driving it to FL!

Another surprise entry was a beautiful teal 1964 PW TW belonging to Robert J. of WI that had been restored to almost perfect condition. This truck was from WI, and it took best of class and best of show! I never got a chance to talk to the owner, as I was way to busy talking to everyone else!

Then in the PG PW category there were:

A 1957 W100 belonging to a guy from TX with a recent resto to almost stock condition.
A mismatched W200 with parts from almost every year of PG!
1958 W100 from MN, this truck is a nicely modified driver, with very tasteful modifications.
A nicely redone 59 W200 from MN
A very recently completed 59 W200 belonging to Ron from Indiana. He had painted this truck less then two weeks prior to the rally! Ron won the obstacle course that was held on thursday with this truck. Great driving!
1960 W200 from WI, a beautiful former IN fire truck that was in almost perfect original condition. It has 8,000 original miles, and the owner traded it for some fire fighting equipment.

A good time was had by all, and a PW TW gained a lot of attention by tearing the lower portion of the passenger side knuckle ball off and having to be retrieved.

Here is a picture of Kevin's truck at the bottom of the hill he was trying to climb. It took Kevin's winch, and that of a flat fender plus several snatch blocks to get the truck up the hill, and then they used a tractor to get the truck to the road where AAA (The company, not Aaron) took over.

Here is Kevin's truck returning on the roll back.

After the truck was lowered the front axle was swapped with a big knuckle Dana 44 from Vintage. There were a few bugs to be worked out before Kevin could drive it home, but he made it out on Sunday.

Kevin received the steel balls award for his escapades!

Come join us next year and lets see if we can have 20 TWs in one place!
